Parallels of Latitude: The Horizontal Slices
Latitude is the angular distance of a point on the Earth's surface, measured in degrees, north or south of the Equator. Think of it as the "up-down" measurement on the globe. The lines that mark these angles are called parallels of latitude because they are parallel to the Equator and to each other.
The Equator is the most important parallel, designated as 0° latitude. It's an imaginary line that circles the Earth at its widest point, dividing it into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Any location north of the Equator has a latitude followed by 'N', and any location south is followed by 'S'.

The angle of latitude is measured from the centre of the Earth. If you drew a line from the Earth's centre to the Equator, and another line from the centre to Mumbai, the angle between those two lines would be Mumbai's latitude, which is approximately 19° N. The maximum possible latitude is 90°, found at the North Pole (90° N) and the South Pole (90° S).

Key Properties of Parallels:
They run in an east-west direction but measure north-south distance.
All parallels are perfect circles, except for the poles, which are points.
The length of the parallels decreases as you move from the Equator towards the poles. The Equator is the longest parallel, also known as a Great Circle.
The distance between each degree of latitude is roughly constant, approximately 111 kilometres (69 miles).
Important Parallels of Latitude
Beyond the Equator, four other parallels are geographically significant because they relate to the Earth's axial tilt and its orbit around the Sun.
