Reading Aloud: Anandi’s Rainbow

Anandi's Rainbow

The Story Begins

It was raining outside. Anandi was fast asleep, dreaming of rainbows. When she woke up, she looked out of her window and saw something magical — there was a huge, bright rainbow across a clear blue sky.

{{VISUAL: A little girl named Anandi looking out of her window at a bright, colorful rainbow stretching across a clear blue sky after the rain}}

Excited by this beautiful sight, Anandi ran out to the garden with Milli, her favourite cat.

Anandi's Creative Idea

Anandi loved to draw and paint. Today, she had a special idea — she wanted to paint the flowers of her garden with the colours of the rainbow.

She began her colorful work:

  • She coloured one flower with violet
  • Another flower with the indigo of the rainbow
  • One flower with blue
  • Leaves with green
  • One flower with orange
  • One flower with red

But she left the yellow so that the Sun may look bright and gay.

The Garden Transforms

And lo! There were beautiful flowers all over the garden. The Sun was up there shining in its yellow glory.

After giving colours to the flowers and the Sun, the rainbow was gone.

Let's Learn: Rainbow Colours

Let's Learn: Rainbow Colours

After reading Anandi's beautiful rainbow story, let's dive into the wonderful world of colours! A rainbow is one of nature's most magical sights, and it appears in the sky after rain when sunlight shines through tiny water droplets.

What is a Rainbow?

A rainbow is a colourful arc that we see in the sky. It looks like a big, beautiful bridge made of colours! Rainbows appear when the sun comes out while it's still raining, or right after the rain stops. The sunlight passes through the water drops in the air and creates seven lovely colours.

The Seven Rainbow Colours

Do you know that a rainbow always has seven colours? And they always appear in the same order! Let's learn them one by one, from top to bottom:

1. Red — The First Colour

Red is bright and bold! It's the colour of apples, roses, and strawberries. In the rainbow, red is at the very top. When you see something red, it often means "stop and look!"

2. Orange — The Happy Colour

Orange is a warm and cheerful colour. It's the colour of oranges (the fruit!), carrots, and pumpkins. Orange sits right below red in the rainbow.

3. Yellow — The Sunny Colour

Yellow is as bright as the sun! It's the colour of bananas, lemons, and sunflowers. Yellow makes us feel happy and energetic. It comes after orange in the rainbow.

4. Green — The Nature Colour

Green is the colour of grass, trees, and leaves. It's fresh and calm. Green is right in the middle of the rainbow! It reminds us of gardens and forests.

{{VISUAL: photo: a cheerful 6-year-old girl in a bright yellow dress pointing excitedly at a real rainbow in a garden, big smile, colorful flowers around her, warm sunlight}}

5. Blue — The Sky Colour

Blue is cool and peaceful. It's the colour of the clear sky and the ocean. Blue comes after green in the rainbow. When we look up on a sunny day, we see beautiful blue all around!

6. Indigo — The Deep Blue

Indigo is a darker shade of blue. It's like the colour of deep water or the night sky just before it gets completely dark. Indigo sits between blue and violet in the rainbow.

7. Violet — The Last Colour

Violet is a pretty purple colour! It's the colour of certain flowers like violets and lavender. Violet is at the very bottom of the rainbow, finishing the beautiful arc.

  • Yellow
  • Green (middle)

  • Indigo
  • Violet (bottom)}}

A Fun Way to Remember

There's a special memory trick to help you remember all seven rainbow colours in the correct order! Many children use the name "VIBGYOR" or "ROY G. BIV".

VIBGYOR stands for:

  • V = Violet
  • I = Indigo
  • B = Blue
  • G = Green
  • Y = Yellow
  • O = Orange
  • R = Red

(This order goes from bottom to top!)

ROY G. BIV stands for:

  • R = Red
  • O = Orange
  • Y = Yellow
  • G = Green
  • B = Blue
  • I = Indigo
  • V = Violet

(This order goes from top to bottom!)

{{ZOOM: title=Why Always Seven Colours? | text=Scientists discovered that when sunlight passes through water, it splits into exactly seven colours that our eyes can see. These colours always appear in the same order because each colour bends by a different amount when passing through water drops!}}

{{KEY: type=exam | title=Remember the Order | text=In exams and activities, you may be asked to name the rainbow colours in the correct order. Always remember ROY G. BIV (from top to bottom) or practise saying Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Indigo-Violet!}}

Colours Around Us

Now that you know the rainbow colours, let's spot them in the world around us!

Rainbow ColourThings We See
RedApple, rose, tomato, strawberry
OrangeOrange fruit, carrot, pumpkin
YellowBanana, sun, lemon, sunflower
GreenGrass, leaves, broccoli, cucumber
BlueSky, ocean, blueberries
IndigoDeep evening sky, certain flowers
VioletGrapes, eggplant, violet flowers

{{VISUAL: diagram: a colorful chart showing the 7 rainbow colours as cute cartoon characters holding their matching objects - red apple, orange fruit, yellow banana, green leaf, blue sky bubble, indigo flower, violet grapes, all with happy smiling faces}}

Anandi's Rainbow Discovery

Just like Anandi in our story, you too can look for rainbows! The best time to spot a rainbow is when it's raining and sunny at the same time. Stand with your back to the sun and look towards the rain — you might see a beautiful rainbow appear!

Every rainbow is special because it reminds us that after every rainy day, something beautiful can appear in the sky!

{{KEY: type=definition | title=Rainbow | text=A rainbow is a colourful arc of seven colours that appears in the sky when sunlight passes through water droplets in the air, usually during or after rain.}}

Remember: Colours make our world beautiful! Whether in a rainbow or in flowers, fruits, and toys, colours bring joy and happiness to our lives. Keep your eyes open and spot all the rainbow colours around you every day!
