Naming and Knowing Our Seasons
Page 1 of 3: Naming and Knowing Our Seasons
What Are Seasons?
Have you ever noticed that sometimes it is very hot outside, and sometimes it feels cool? Or that some days you see rain, and other days the sky is bright and sunny? This happens because our Earth goes through different seasons throughout the year.
A season is a time of the year when the weather has a special pattern. Different seasons bring different kinds of weather, different clothes to wear, and different activities to enjoy!

In India, we enjoy four main seasons every year. Each season is special and brings its own joy. Let us meet them one by one!
Meet the Four Seasons
1. Summer ☀️
Summer is the season when the sun shines brightly and the weather becomes very hot. During summer, the days are long and the nights are short. You will often feel thirsty and want to drink lots of water!
{{KEY: type=definition | title=What is Summer? | text=Summer is the hottest season of the year when the sun is very strong, days are long, and we need to stay cool and hydrated.}}
When does Summer come?
Summer usually comes in the months of March, April, May, and June in India.
What do we see in Summer?
The sun is very bright and strong
Trees have green leaves
We see mangoes, watermelons, and cucumbers
Children enjoy summer vacations from school!
What do we wear?
In summer, we wear light and thin clothes like cotton shirts, shorts, frocks, and caps to stay cool.
2. Monsoon 🌧️
Monsoon is the season of rain! Dark clouds fill the sky and rain pours down. Everything around us becomes fresh and green. Plants and trees love the rain because it helps them grow.
{{KEY: type=concept | title=Why is Monsoon Important? | text=Monsoon brings rain that fills rivers, lakes, and wells with water. Farmers need this rain to grow crops like rice, wheat, and vegetables that we eat. Without monsoon, plants and people would not get enough water.}}
When does Monsoon come?
Monsoon usually comes in the months of June, July, August, and September in India.
What do we see in Monsoon?
Dark clouds in the sky
Rain falling from the sky
Puddles of water on roads and parks
Rainbows after the rain!
Frogs croaking happily
What do we wear?
In monsoon, we wear raincoats, carry umbrellas, and wear gumboots to keep ourselves dry.

3. Autumn 🍂
Autumn is a cool and pleasant season. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold. During autumn, you will notice that some trees start to lose their leaves. The leaves turn yellow, orange, and brown before they fall to the ground.
{{KEY: type=points | title=Special Things About Autumn | text=- The weather is cool and comfortable.
Many trees shed their old leaves.
Farmers harvest crops like rice and cotton.
We celebrate festivals like Dussehra and Diwali.}}
When does Autumn come?
Autumn usually comes in the months of October and November in India.
What do we see in Autumn?
Leaves falling from trees
Clear blue skies
Beautiful flowers blooming
Colourful kites flying in the sky
What do we wear?
In autumn, we can wear light sweaters or full-sleeved clothes because the weather is pleasant.
4. Winter ❄️
Winter is the coldest season of the year. The sun feels mild and gentle, and the air becomes chilly. In some parts of India, it even snows! Winter mornings can be foggy, and you might need a blanket to stay warm.
{{KEY: type=definition | title=What is Winter? | text=Winter is the coldest season when temperatures drop, days are shorter, nights are longer, and we need warm clothes to protect ourselves from the cold.}}
When does Winter come?
Winter usually comes in the months of December, January, and February in India.
What do we see in Winter?
Cold winds blowing
Fog in the early morning
People sitting around bonfires to keep warm
Snow on mountains in some regions
We enjoy hot soup, tea, and warm food
What do we wear?
In winter, we wear thick and warm clothes like sweaters, jackets, mufflers, socks, and caps to keep our body warm.
{{VISUAL: diagram: four happy smiling children holding hands in a circle, each wearing different seasonal clothes - one in summer cap and shorts, one in raincoat with umbrella, one in light sweater with falling leaves around, and one in thick winter jacket with a scarf, bright candy colours}}
Why Do Seasons Change?
Seasons change because of the way our Earth moves around the Sun. As Earth travels in its path, different parts of Earth get different amounts of sunlight at different times of the year. This causes the weather to change, and we experience different seasons!
{{KEY: type=exam | title=Remember This | text=In exams, you may be asked to name all four seasons and tell which months they come in. Also remember what clothes we wear and what we see in each season.}}
Let's Remember!
