Diversity in Plants and Animals Around Us
Have you ever looked at your school garden and wondered why a delicate rose bush is so different from a giant, shady neem tree? Or why a tiny ant scurrying on the ground lives a completely different life from a colourful butterfly fluttering by? This incredible variety among living things is all around us, and it's what makes our planet so fascinating.
This variety in plants and animals is called biological diversity, or biodiversity. It’s not just about how things look, but also where they live, what they eat, and how they behave. From the snow-covered Himalayas to the hot deserts of Rajasthan and the wet forests of the Western Ghats, India is home to a staggering number of different plants and animals.

{{KEY: type=definition | title=Biological Diversity (Biodiversity) | text=The variety of life on Earth, in all its forms, from the smallest bacteria and fungi to the largest plants and animals. It includes the diversity of species, their genes, and the ecosystems they form.}}
You don’t have to travel far to see this diversity in action. Just take a walk in a local park! You might see squirrels, crows, different types of grasses, flowering plants, and countless insects. Each organism plays a unique role in its environment, creating a complex and beautiful web of life.

Now that we appreciate this vast variety, how do we even begin to make sense of it all? Let's find out how we can start organizing this living world on the next page.
